Ukraine war

How the war in Ukraine affects operations at LAB and LUT (9.3.2022)

Our Ukraine war intranet page contains up-to-date information, policies and guidelines related to the war in Ukraine that concern the LAB and LUT community. We will update the page regularly. If necessary, we will also send email on the most recent policy outlines.

A coordination group has been assigned to coordinate our actions concerning the war in Ukraine. The group will meet regularly. If you have problems or questions related to the effects of the crisis on your studies or work, you can send email to crisis.ukraine@lab.fi or crisis.ukraine@lut.fi.

Project and research collaboration with Russian and Belarusian organisations

We have interrupted all collaboration with Russian and Belarusian organisations.

In addition, the EU Commission has decided to suspend collaboration on CBC projects with Russia and Belarus. We are waiting for more detailed practical guidelines from the funding programme of the projects.

All institutional collaboration with Russia and Belarus frozen

Minister of Science and Culture Antti Kurvinen has decided today on new Russia-related policies regarding higher education and research. The Ministry of Education and Culture recommends refraining from all institutional collaboration with Russia and Belarus.

This means that LAB and LUT will suspend all contracts with Russian and Belarusian partners and organisations. In other words, we will in no way cooperate with these actors.

All contract-based cooperation will be interrupted until further notice. This means e.g. that no new student exchanges will take place (but ongoing exchange periods may be finished as planned) and double degree student selections will not take place (current double degree students will continue as regular LUT and LAB students). We will provide more information on Monday 14 March 2022.

People will continue to be able to apply to degree programmes, doctoral studies and jobs at LUT and LAB regardless of their nationality. The freeze applies only to contract-based cooperation.

Studies of current students

All current students will continue their studies normally. If new national or EU policies are outlined, we will provide information on them as quickly as possible.

Admissions in 2022

Regular and rolling admission will take place as usual – no changes will be implemented. If new national or EU policies are outlined, we will provide information on them as quickly as possible.

Travelling to Ukraine, Russia or Belarus (24.2.2022)

Russia has invaded Ukraine on Thursday 24th February 2022. Ukraine is now at war. Both LUT and LAB show their support to Ukraine and especially to the academic community. We join Finland’s and EU’s statement and condemn Russia’s actions.

According to travel recommendations of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, there’s a terrorism threat everywhere in Russia and the security situation has worsened. We recommend avoiding all travels to Ukraine, Russia or Belarus.

You can find up-to-date travel recommendations on the website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (https://um.fi/frontpage(external site, link opens a new tab)).

Exchange students

There are a few LUT’s and LAB’s exchange students in Russia. They have all been contacted on Thursday. Currently there are no exchange students in Ukraine or Belarus.

According to travel recommendations of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, there’s a terrorism threat everywhere in Russia and the security situation has worsened. It’s impossible to predict further developments, but we strongly recommend students to consider intermitting their exchange and coming back home.

We are following the situation carefully. If we receive any instructions from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Finnish National Agency for Education or other authorities, we will act accordingly and send further instructions.

We also ask you to follow the news and other announcements and file a travel notification, if you haven’t already done so: https://matkustusilmoitus.fi/(external site, link opens a new tab)

We also advise you to follow travel recommendations of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (https://um.fi/uusimmat-matkustustiedotteet) and to avoid travelling to Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.
