Campus information

How to get to Lahti and Lappeenranta

• The city of Lahti is about 100 km from Helsinki. Arriving at Lahti campus.
• The city of Lappeenranta is located in South Karelia, some 220 km northeast of Finland’s capital, Helsinki.  Arriving to Lappeenranta campus,
• By train: Direct Express or Intercity trains from Helsinki to Lahti take one hour, and to Lappeenranta two hours. You can take a train also from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. vr.fi/en
• By bus: Express coaches from Helsinki: expressbus.fi/en
  Low-cost bus connections: onnibus.com/home
• By car: Take motorway number 4 from Helsinki to Lahti (100 km) and highway number 12 from Lahti via Kouvola to Lappeenranta.

You have to confirm your study place and register your attendance as instructed in the letter of acceptance.

Accepting the study place

• After being accepted to a degree programme at LAB, you must accept the place at My Studyinfo within the deadline stated in your Letter of Admission. If the place is not accepted within the deadline, the place will be lost.
• A student may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland in education that begins in the same academic term. This rule applies to all higher education. After you have accepted a study place offered to you by a higher education institution in Finland, your choice will be finalised and you will not be able to change your choice afterwards. This rule applies even if a student postpones the commencement or interrupts their studies during the academic term when the offered study place has been accepted.

Registering present or absent

• Once you have accepted a place to study, register as present or absent for the academic year in the Oili Service, which you can access from My Studyinfo.
• You may enroll as absent during the first academic year only for the legal reasons which includes service under the Conscription Act, the Non-Military Service Act, the Women’s Voluntary Military Service Act, maternity, paternity or parental leave or own illness or disability. You have received the instructions for the absence in your letter of acceptance.

Finnish universities are legally obliged to charge tuition fees as of 1 August 2017 from new students from non-EU/EEA countries.

• Tuition fee and Tuition fee payments

International students are allowed to study in Finland for a maximum of 90 days without a residence permit. If your studies exceed 90 days you must apply for a residence permit that covers the whole duration of your studies. Please note that even if you stay in Finland for less than 90 days, you may still need a visa.

You can apply for the residence permit at any Finnish diplomatic embassy or a consulate. Please start the application process immediately after receiving the official letter of acceptance from LAB University of Applied Sciences in order to avoid delay in your studies.

Your application will proceed to the Finnish Immigration Service for processing after you have visited a Finnish embassy for identification.

Unfortunately, the Admissions Office at LAB cannot provide assistance in the application process for the residence permit. For more information regarding residence permit and visa requirements please contact your nearest Finnish or other EU member state embassy representing Finland in visa matters.

Housing application to Lahti

• Students who start their studies in programmes on the Lahti campus can apply for student accommodation in Lahti. LAB cooperates with the local housing organisation, Lahden Talot Oy. More information about Lahti housing.

Housing application to Lappeenranta

• Students who start their studies on the Lappeenranta campus can apply for student accommodation directly from the Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation (LOAS). Please visit the LOAS website at loas.fi/en for detailed application instructions. More information about Lappeenranta housing.

Activate your LUT account:

1. Wait for the instruction email.
2. Activate your LUT account and set a password at: https://id.lut.fi(external site, link opens a new tab) or authenticate via the Signicat service.

Duo MFA:

1. Install the Duo Mobile app on your phone.
2. Activate Duo Mobile by clicking the activation link sent to your email after you have activated your LUT account.

When your LUT account is ready to be activated, you will receive instructions by email from Student IT Helpdesk Services (student.ithelpdesk@lut.fi). The email will be sent at least one week before the start of your studies. Please remember to check your spam folder as well, as the message may end up there.

The instructions will tell you how to register with id.lut.fi. Before you can use the LAB services, you must register with id.lut.fi. You can register using your bank details, mobile certificate or ID card. Registration and activation of user IDs is done at https://id.lut.fi

• Students who are able to use Finnish e-identification methods (such as online banking ID credentials) can activate their LUT account here: https://id.lut.fi.
• Students who cannot use Finnish e-identification methods can find instructions for activating their LUT account at the LUT ID and signing in -page.

Your user ID will be used as a username when logging into the LAB systems (for example the online learning platform Moodle).

After you have activated your LUT account, you will receive an email to activate the Duo Mobile (MFA).

Study Tools

• Student Systems: Available systems include Moodle, Sisu*, TimeEdit, EXAM, Turnitin, Zoom, Echo360, and Webropol.
• Computer Software:  Accessible in computer classrooms or via the LUT-VDI remote access service. Some software (like Office 365) can also be installed on your personal computer (BYOD).

*Sisu

• Sisu is LAB's student and study information system. In Sisu, you can plan your studies, track your progress, enroll for courses and view and edit your own contact information. You can only edit your own contact details, such as your phone number and address, once you start your studies. You can see your study time and your student number in Sisu. The system requires to login with LUT ID. You can also order electronically signed study certificates and transcripts from Sisu.

• In Sisu, under the My Information tab, the information will be visible once your right to study is active, i.e. from January 1 or August 1.

Bring your own laptop computer with you. You will need it during lessons, to write your essays and other assignments, to watch teaching videos and to study independently. Read more Own computer -page.

LAB University of Applied Sciences students are expected to follow ethical guidelines throughout their studies. It is your responsibility to read the ethical guidelines and to comply with them throughout your studies.

LAB@key is a Moodle-based digital orientation that guides you through the key practices of higher education studies, the services available to students, and the essential tools you’ll need in your daily studies – from student communication and completion of studies to campuses, student life, and content that supports your study well being. It provides a clear, step by step structure that helps you quickly become familiar with LAB’s ways of working so you can begin your studies with confidence and ease.

You can start the digital orientation as soon as you have activated your LUT ID. (Checklist item -> 3. Activate your user ID). The digital orientation can be completed between 3 August - 11 September 2026. After this time, the LAB@key course can no longer be taken.

No credits are awarded for the digital orientation.

Please note! Digital familiarization does not replace participation in orientation days, but it answers most of the questions asked before the start of studies and guides you to the information in eLAB.

With a keycard / access key, you get access to LAB campuses in Lahti or Lappeenranta. 

• Lahti campus: the access card must be ordered. To order the access card, you will need a photo of yourself and your seven-digit student number. You will find your student number at Sisu. You will find the instructions from Electronic access card - Lahti -page.
   
• Lappeenranta campus: Students can purchase the Mobile access key or the physical access key "dot". You will find the instructions from Electronic access - Lappeenranta -page.

Student card is the official id of a student. When you become a member of Student Union KOE you get a student card and all its benefits and discounts locally. Degree student card offers you national student benefits as well as local discount in Lahti and in Lappeenranta. To order a student ID card, you will need your student ID number, which you will receive after activating your LUT username (Instructions for activation).The student number you will find from Sisu (after you have activated yout LUT-account).

Bachelor's and Master's degree students, (exchange students excluded) are provided with healthcare services by the Finnish Student Health care Services.  (YTHS in Finnish). The FSHS has a full range of medical services including preventive, medical, mental and dental healthcare.

The health care fee for students in higher education is paid to Kela, and FSHS provides health care services to students. Students who are entitled to use the services provided by the Finnish Student Health Service FSHS must pay a student healthcare fee to Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).

Every foreign student needs a Personal Identity Number. It is formed by your birthday and four digits, example 010192-000A. You will receive it from Digital and Population Data Service Agency. Read more: DVV info

You may have gotten this identity code during the process for applying for a residence permit - but if this not being the case, you will get it through a registering process at Digital and Population Data Service Agency.

• Registration of students: 3 September, 10 September and 17 September 2026
• The opening hours are 9.00 - 15.00
• Address: LAB University of Applied Sciences, Yliopistonkatu 36 
• Registration happens in sports hall next to LAB main hall.
• Note that registration uses queue numbers.
• Newcomers must primarily use these registration days at campus or the early registration days at DVV office mentioned above

Lappeenranta DVV Office

• Registration of students on 13 August and 20 August 2026
• The opening hours are 9.00 - 15.00
• Visiting address: Villimiehenkatu 2 B, 1, floor, 53100 Lappeenranta
• For early registration newcomers must primarily use these registration days at DVV office not book individual meetings with DVV.
   

2. Registration with booking an appointment

If not able to make it to Digital and Population Data Service Agency during their pre-determined dates for registering, you need to book an appointment on their website https://secure.vihta.com/public-ng/dvv/#/reservation

When booking an appointment, you need to book it for an International registration.

Note: If having booked an appointment and then instead, completing the registration on the pre-determined dates or for some other reason can´t make it to your booked appointment, you must to cancel your booking. Otherwise charge of 50€ for unused appointment might be collected.

Start your registration electronically via the electronic form 

The e-form will be filled in via the website.

• Registration of a foreign student in the Population Information System

on which you will find information on how to fill in the registration form plus how to proceed if you have already received a personal identity code through Finnish Immigration Service (MIGRI).

In addition to filling in the e-form, students must visit the Digi and Population Information Office to identify themselves and present their original documents within three months of submitting the e-form.

Documents required for the registering (DVV office & campus)

The following documents are required for registering:

1. Fill in the e-form for registration at Registration of a foreign student in the Population Information System and submit it.
   a.  If you use e-form registration, you may use electronic study certificate with e-signature and stamp.
2. If you could not fill the electronic registration form, fill in the paper registration form, print it and sign it (the third page is not required).

      1. Note: Fill and print the form beforehand!
      2. Note: If you fill the electronic form for students online, this printed registration form is not needed anymore
3. Study certificate with stamp and signature (not Letter of acceptance).

4. A Passport or official ID-card.
5. A Residence permit card (if applicable).

Registering your spouse and children

• The family members can come and register at the same time with the students. To register the family relations, please print and fill the necessary forms found here: https://dvv.fi/en/life-changes-while-living-abroad
• Remember to take the original marriage/ birth certificates + possible translations with you when you come to register.
• Certificates also require legalised translations/ EU translation form if the language is other than Finnish, Swedish or English. (If translated abroad, the translation must be legalised there). Translations by authorised translators in Finland do not need to be translated.

Register your Finnish personal identity code​ into Sisu-system

• When you have received the Finnish personal identity code, please inform us the code through this eForm link.
• You are not able to see your own study information in My Study Info until we have added your personal identity code there. (After this e.g. FSHS and HSL will see your information.)
• Note! For security reasons, never send your social security number by email! And do not share your social security number publicly under any circumstances.​

Student email (@student.lab.fi)
The student email is the main channel of communication between students and the university. It is used to distribute important announcements, so students should check it regularly. Communication is formal, but also encouraging and supportive of students.
