Request to show criminal record extract based on the criminal records act and the act on checking the criminal background of persons working with children.

Before your practical training:
If you have young customers/patients (less than 18-year-olds), you need to order and show the criminal record extract 4 weeks before your practical training.

Before studification:
Valid after: 1.8.2022: When planning studification, where you act with young customers/patients (less than 18-year-olds), you need to show a criminal record extract before starting your work period. You need to show the criminal record extract, even though the work period would take place during your employment relationship, even if you have already shown the document during your recruitment process.

Are you about to start your practical training?

LAB University of Applied Sciences requires students of Health Care Unit to show the extract from the criminal records before starting such practical training, which includes working with minors. Extract from the criminal records is required also when practical training takes place during an employment relationship.

The responsibility to show the extract from the criminal records is based on the act on checking the criminal background of persons working with children (2002/504) and on the criminal records act (1993/770).

In accordance with Criminal Records Act 6 §:

A private individual may obtain an extract on his or her own entries in the criminal records for taking on a job which regularly and to a substantial degree involves working with minors and for which an extract, in accordance with the Act on the Investigation of the Criminal History of Persons Working with Children (504/2002), is to be presented to the employer or authority. The extract shall be delivered free of charge. (505/2002)

Ordering an extract from the legal register centre

Students order the extract from the legal register centre.

Legal register centre processes an application for an extract within seven working days.

The extract for practical training in Finland is free of charge.

Notice: You can always order the document to be delivered electronically, so you will receive it quicker than through conventional letter -mail. 

If there are obstacles that may prevent the student from starting the practical training:

If the extract shows markings that may prevent the student from working with minors during the practical training, the case will be discussed individually.

Information for students

Remote eMeetings - the link to all these Teams -meetings.

Study counsellor Siru Kilpilampi will be checking extracts through Teams as follows:

1. Choose the date and join the Teams-meeting to show your extract document. The link to all these Teams -meetings.
2. Remember to be prepared to prove your identity (identity card, passport).
3. In the beginning of the remote session, you will be given a personal online-time for 5 minutes. Before checking the document, we make sure that at that moment there are no other students participating in the meeting. When given permission, you can show the document to the camera shortly. 
4. The following information will be added to the student data in Peppi-administrative system: the date of admitting the document and the date of the validity (6 months). You can see this added information from Peppi > Study information > Specifiers.
5. When you start your practical training, it is recommended to have your extract with you during the first days. Your practical training representative has the right to ask you to show the document, because it has been ordered specifically for this purpose.

Notice! Please do not send your document to any member of staff - the document is strictly private. The only time to show your document is via Teams, during the times as follows: 

If you are going abroad as an exchange student

If you are going to be an exchange student and need to present the extract abroad, you must order criminal records extract that is subject to a fee. If the exchange country requires, the student needs to show the extract to the practical training employer abroad.
