LUT Universities’ guidelines

These guidelines present ways to address harassment and misconduct in study-related situations and the study environment. The guidelines apply only to harassment and misconduct that takes place on campus or in connection with studies. LUT Universities is not able to intervene in inappropriate conduct that occurs in your free time.

Safe environment for studies

LUT Universities’ campus rules (5 October 2020), section 2, state that everyone on campus should conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. We wish to provide everyone a safe work and study environment that does not endanger anyone's safety or health.

Everyone must be treated fairly and equally, and we do not condone any violence, bullying, harassment, intimidation, discrimination or other inappropriate behaviour in our higher education community.

What is misconduct?

Misconduct may include:

  • Harassment
  • Bullying
  • Discrimination
  • Sexual harassment
  • Gender-based harassment
  • Racism

Misconduct in study-related situations may take place between students, a teacher and a student, or a student and other staff member.

What is harassment?

Harassment refers to discrimination prohibited in the Non-Discrimination Act. The act defines harassment as behaviour that is in deliberate or factual violation of the dignity of a person or group of people.

A person who harasses someone creates a degrading, humiliating, threatening, hostile or aggressive environment for a person or group of people on grounds such as sexual orientation, ethnic origin, or disability.  

Harassment may include:

  • Offensive emails, gestures or facial expressions
  • Racist jokes, name-calling
  • Spreading inappropriate material
  • Belittling or mocking, hate speech
  • Intimidation or threats
