Applying for extra time to complete your studies

When your statutory right to study expires, you may apply for additional time to complete your degree. Additional time may be granted (subject to the conditions below) one semester at a time, for a maximum of three semesters (1.5 years).

Conditions for applying for the first period of additional time:    

  • You are missing a maximum of 60 credits for a Bachelor’s degree or 30 credits for a Master’s degree.    

    AND    

  • You present a realistic plan to complete your studies within one academic year. If the plan is realistic, the credit limit requirement may be relaxed, for example, to take your life situation into account.    
  • Additional time is granted one semester at a time, and your progress is reviewed before the next semester is granted.

Conditions for applying for a second or third period of additional time:    

  • You have made progress in your studies during the previous period of additional time.    

    AND    

  • You present a realistic plan to complete your studies within one semester.    
  • Additional time may be granted for a total maximum of three semesters, one semester at a time.

How to apply

Right to study ending at the end of July    

  • Apply for additional time for a right to study ending on 31 July via Sisu by the end of April. 
  • Decisions on applications submitted by the deadline will be made by the end of May.

Right to study ending at the end of December    

  • Apply for additional time for a right to study ending on 31 December via Sisu by November 15. 
  • Decisions on applications submitted by the deadline will be made by mid-December.

If your right to study in Sisu has already expired, you can submit an application to the study counsellor for processing via an e-form. Please request the application link from the study counsellor.

Application fee

A processing fee of €50, in accordance with the decree (1440/2014, Section 3), is charged for processing an application for an extension. The fee is paid via LABshop. Payment can also be made directly to the university of applied sciences’ account: FI25 5000 0120 4424 46. Please use the following reference message for the payment: "exceeding the study right".
