Guidance and support at three campuses
Study guidance and support are provided throughout the studies.
The key elements of study guidance are
When starting your studies at LAB University of Applied Sciences, information and support will be provided by your teacher tutor, study counsellors, peer tutors, group representatives, student union KOE and student services. You will be asked feedback soon after the beginning in order to evaluate if the support and guidance offered are high quality and adequate.
The student services
Coordinating the orientation for new students and supporting you e.g. with systems and services.
LAB@key -course
1 ECTS a digital orientation course to students. The aim of the course is to help new students to familiarize themselves with the procedures, digital tools and learning environments used at the LAB University of Applied Sciences.
Developing professional competence -course
3 ECTS a mandatory course for all LAB bachelor-level students. The aim of the course is to help students to recognize their own competence and plan their own learning, among other things.
Teacher tutor
Each student has an appointed teacher tutor. The teacher tutor assists and supports your through your studies, from the beginning of the studies until the time of graduation. They will support you in evaluating your personal competencies, developing your strengths and planning your personal study plan. They are also carrying out the orientation for new students, Developing professional competence -course and career counselling.
Study Councellers
The study councellers are supporting you especially if your studies are not proceeding ahead with your plan.
Peer tutors
Peer tutors support new students by sharing their experiences, knowledge and expertise. In particular, peer tutors provide valuable guidance at the beginning of studies when many students are new to the UAS and to the city. They introduce you to the UAS and its learning environments and help you with questions concerning studies and student life. The peer tutors organize activities to help students to get to know each other and coordinate channels of communication within the student group.
Class reps
The Class Reps are chosen among bachelor students to represent their class. They are a link between students and staff and they are encouraging students to give feedback on studies and courses. The Class Reps meet once a year under the chairmanship of the degree managers, in addition to which the Class Reps have their own mutual meetings.
Student Union KOE
The Student Union KOE offers you advocacy, events and tutoring. You can get a student card and/or personal ID card for Lahti Campus and keycard for Lappeenranta Campus from the KOE.
During your studies you get support and study guidance from your teacher tutor, study councellers, student services, career services and other services at LAB.
The teacher tutor supports and give you guidance through your studies, from the beginning of the studies until the time of graduation. During your studies your teacher tutor supports your e.g. with developing your professional competence, planning and carrying out your studies. Teacher tutors also follow your progression with your studies.
You get guidance and support during the practical training from the teachers responsible for practical training in your field of study. In social and health care unit with placements reserved by Jobiili you get support from your teacher supervising your practical training as well. In international practical training you get support and guidance from the coordinator of student mobility.
Thesis is a significant part of the studies. When you have decided your thesis subject, a thesis supervisor will be appointed to you. The thesis supervisor is supporting you during the whole thesis process.
Your teacher tutor is responsible for career counselling when choosing different study options. The student may need help when making choice of specialization and the teacher tutor can support with it. If you have more generic questions about the Finnish working life of career planning, LUT & LAB Career Services will help you with those.
Student services and other services
- The student services offer guidance and support with online systems and services, the e-services.

Study councellers support if you have challenges with the progression of your studies.
There are appointed teachers responsible for student exchange issues.
At the end of the studies there are several ways to support the student to graduate.
Teacher tutor supports you from the beginning of studies until the time of graduation. The teacher tutor helps you to plan your studies so that you are able to graduate in time and follows the progression of your studies.
Study councellors support you at the end of your studies if you need help with completing your degree or if you are studying overtime.
AVOP - Graduand feedback questionnaire asks graduating students to evaluate and provide feedback on their education. The results are used locally by LAB as well as nationally to inform performance-based monitoring.
