Exchange grants
When leaving for an exchange, students will generally receive an exchange grant, provided that sufficient credits must be completed during the exchange and that the exchange must be included as a part of their own degree at LAB.
The type and amount of the grant is determined by the exchange programme as well as the destination and the length of the exchange period. When searching destinations on the Exchange Possibilities Portal, the grant programme is mentioned in the details of each partner institution.
As a general rule, most European partner institutions are part of the Erasmus+ programme, funded by the European Commission, through which exchange students receive an Erasmus+ grant. Some of the partner institutions in the Nordic and Baltic countries are part of the Erasmus+ programme and some are part of the Nordplus networks.
If your planned host institution is part of the Nordplus network, you will find information about it in the Exchange Possibilities portal in the details of the particular institution (program).
For exchange destinations outside Europe, LAB's own exchange grant is paid to the student.
Additional grants in Erasmus+ programme
Within Erasmus+ programme you also have a possibility to get additional grant if you are a student with so called "fewer opportinities" (for example students with underaged children, refugee background, severe health issues etc). Learn more about the possibility for additional grants from here.
Note also that if you travel by using green travel methods, within Erasmus programme you can get higher travel grant for that. Learn more from here.
Grant payment to a student
The grant is applied through LAB Mobility-Online and you will be able to apply for the grant after you have received the official acceptance from the host institution and completed the Learning Agreement and signed it in LAB Mobility-Online. The grant will be paid as a lump sum before the start of the exchange (if possible).
Grants are processed in International Mobility Services only once a month. The payment date is the last day of the month, and in order for the grant to be paid in time for that month, all actions necessary for the grant must be completed in LAB Mobility-Online by the first day of the month. Grant payments will not be processed in July and August. Note also that in December-January there might be some exceptions to the payment timeline because of the holiday season.
The grant is paid only for the physical exchange period. This means that the exchange must take place physically in the host country. No grant will be awarded for an exchange period which is completed fully remotely. For a blended mobility period, a grant will be awarded for the physical period in the host country and the virtual part is zero-grant. The blended exchange therefore takes place partly in the home country and partly in the host country.
Please note that you are required to pay back part or the whole grant if you fail to complete the minimum amount of credits (20 ECTS per semester) during your exchange, or if you fail to complete the steps required after the exchange. Also possible changes to the duration of Erasmus+ exchange will have an affect to the grant amount.
The grant amounts can be found below in the accordion menu and the more detailed grant conditions at the bottom of the page (grant notice file). Please note that there has been changes to the Erasmus+ grant's country groups starting from the academic year 2024-2025.
