Welcome to start your path studies!
As a path student, you will study in the same group as degree students and receive guidance and support for your studies from a tutor teacher and students.
The checklist below contains the first steps for a smooth start to your studies.
After completing path studies at Open UAS, you can apply for a LAB Degree Programme by separate application based on Open UAS studies.
Open UAS path students take part in new student orientation days. During orientation you will meet your tutor teacher and fellow students.
On the orientation pages you will find the programme for the first week of your studies and other important information about starting your studies. Read the instructions carefully!
Before you can use any services at LAB University of Applied Sciences, you must activate your LUT account.
Student IT Support Services will contact each new student via email whenever the student’s LUT account is ready to be activated. We will send the email to your personal email address from address student.ithelpdesk@lut.fi. The message contains detailed instructions for LUT account activation.
If you have a Finnish ID number and Finnish network banking credentials or Finnish mobile ID, you can activate your LUT account at https://id.lut.fi/
When visiting the LAB campuses, you will need a keycard.
If you're studying at Lahti campus, order the keycard from Student Union KOE. You will need a photo and your student number. In the degree programme menu, choose Open studies. You can find your student number in Sisu under My profile → Personal information.
If you are studying at Lappeenranta campus, you can purchase a keycard (10 €) from the LAB webshop and pick up the key on receipt from the Student Union KOE's service desk at the main lobby.
LAB@key is student’s digital introduction, which serves the purpose of getting you familiar with the procedures, digital tools and environments used in the University of Applied Sciences. LAB@key includes information about the digital tools and systems (user ID, e-mail, learning environments), course variety, as well as common knowledge about the progress of your studies and students’ wellbeing.
You will be able to start this online course after having activated your LUT ID (login and password).
To support the orientation day, we recommend that you complete LAB@key, which is a digital orientation to students. The platform is open for students from 3 August - 11 September 2026. After this time, the course can no longer be taken.
No credits are awarded for the digital orientation.
Please note! Digital familiarization does not replace participation in orientation days, but it answers most of the questions asked before the start of studies and guides you to the information in eLAB.

As students of the Open University of Applied Sciences, path students are considered part-time students. This implies some limitations compared to full-time degree students:
